Seoul Travel Guide & ETA Application Tips

1. ETA / VISA

1) VISA

If you are not from a visa-exempt or visa waiver agreement country, you must obtain a visa before entering South Korea. To apply for a South Korean visa, follow these steps:

  • Application location: South Korean embassy or consulate in your country (region).
  • Applicant: The foreigner themselves or a visa application agency (designated travel agency) can apply on their behalf.
  • Required documents: Visa issuance application form (Form No. 17, or Visa Portal application menu >> Electronic form), passport, photo (color, 3.5cm x 4.5cm), fee (principally paid in USD - if allowed by the head of the overseas mission, payment is possible in the currency of the host country), required documents for each stay qualification.
  • Electronic visa application through the visa portal: Visa issuance application form (electronic application form), passport copy file, photo file (color, 3.5cm x 4.5cm), fee (credit card that can make electronic payments), required document files for each stay qualification.

2) ETA

From September 1, 2021, nationals of 66 countries with a visa waiver agreement with Korea and 46 countries and regions where visa-free entry is allowed need a pre-travel permit (ETA) to enter Korea.

  • Application deadline: Apply for K-ETA at least 72 hours before boarding the aircraft.
  • Application method: Apply on the K-ETA website or mobile app (K-ETA).
  • Fee: 10,000 KRW (about 9~10 dollars, excluding additional fees)
  • Validity period: Valid for 2 years from the date of approval (entry is possible regardless of the number of times within the period)
  • Review content: Automatic analysis of facial information, entry information, risk level, K-ETA approval/disapproval decision → Notify results by E-Mail

2-2) ETA Exemption

There are countries that are exempt from ETA application among ETA target countries. The following are the countries temporarily exempt from the South Korean Electronic Travel Authorization (K-ETA). (This information is valid from April 1, 2023, to December 31, 2024)

  • Asia: Japan, Taiwan, Hong Kong, Singapore, Macao
  • Americas: USA (including Guam), Canada
  • Europe: UK, Germany, France, Italy, Netherlands, Spain, Poland, Sweden, Finland, Norway, Belgium, Denmark, Austria
  • Oceania: New Zealand, Australia

2. Inter-city transportation methods

1) Subway AREX (Airport Railroad): AREX is the fastest railway to go from Incheon Airport to Seoul. There are two types of trains on AREX, 'Express' and 'All Stop'. The Express is a direct train between ICN and Seoul Station, and the All Stop train stops at 13 stations between ICN and Seoul Station.
 
2) Bus As soon as you pass the arrival hall, you can see many buses going almost everywhere in Korea. The fastest and most convenient way to go to Seoul is to use the city airport limousine.
 
3) Taxis are the easiest and most convenient way to get to your destination, although they cost more than other options. There are various types of taxis, including regular taxis, deluxe taxis, and jumbo taxis. 'KAKAO TAXI' is a taxi call app developed by Kakao, the largest mobile platform in Korea. Through this app, users can easily call a taxi anytime, anywhere. Also, this app supports multiple languages including Korean, English, Chinese, and Japanese, so foreigners can use it easily.
 

3. Recommended accommodation locations

1) Myeongdong
The center of shopping and culture in Korea Myeongdong is the main center of shopping and culture in Korea. It is famous for various flagship stores of brands, famous restaurants, cafes, and street food stands. Myeongdong is also a popular place for Hallyu fans, with many stores selling K-beauty products and K-pop goods.
 
2) Itaewon, Hannam-dong
Itaewon Hannam-dong is the center of unique culture and diversity. This place, where many foreigners have stayed since the past, is famous for various restaurants, cafes, galleries, and shopping stores. If the area near Itaewon Station is a vibrant area with a more diverse and diverse population, Hannam-dong has a more luxurious and quiet atmosphere.
 
3) Gangnam
Gangnam is a sophisticated area, full of high-end attractions including shopping, nightclubs, sights, and places to enjoy. 5) Jonggak, Gwanghwamun
Jonggak and Gwanghwamun are located in the center of Seoul. You can experience cultural heritage and food. It is close to Myeongdong, Itaewon, etc., and is convenient for transportation.
 

4. SIM Card

In Korea, various SIM cards are provided by various telecommunications companies. Generally, SIM cards provide data only or provide voice and text services together. There are various rate plans that travelers can choose according to their needs, and some rate plans provide unlimited 4G internet access.
In Korea, you can also use eSIM. eSIM is a digital SIM that can activate a cellular plan of a mobile carrier without using a physical SIM card. To purchase a SIM card in Korea, you need to register passport information and photos, and some rate plans may require a minimum usage period.
